WLCI Business School Reviews HIGGS BOSON Scientists

14 Jun

Prof. Virdee and Prof. Tom Kibble, two of the 6 researchers whose initial work in the 1960’s led to the eventual discovery of the Higgs have been knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Both Virdee and Prof Kibble became knights. They are joined by other distinguished scientists.

The elusive particle commonly called as “God Particle” was finally detected in 2012 at Cern by two giant experiments – Atlas and CMS. He originated the concept of CMS in 1990 with four colleagues, oversaw its construction, and acted as spokesman for the experiment when it first began taking data in 2006-10.

Prof Virdee developed new technologies within the detector that ultimately allowed it to find the Higgs – the mechanism which explains how sub-atomic particles came to have substance, or mass.
Thousands of scientists and engineers have worked on CMS and it was their painstaking efforts creating this experiment that made these discoveries possible.

According to Prof Virdee’s own words “The Higgs is a very special type of particle – one we’ve never seen before. It has strange properties that we need to understand. This award was a complete surprise to me. It’s really quite humbling and of course I’m delighted to receive it. I’m over the Moon to be frank.”

The discovery of a Higgs boson have allowed physicists to finally validate the last untested area of the Standard Model’s approach to fundamental particles and forces, guide other theories and discoveries in particle physics, and potentially lead to developments in “new” physics.

WLCI talks about a career in Fashion

31 May

Step into the world of Fashion Designing

Fashion and youth go hand in hand. After all, is there anything more exciting or happening than fashion? You don’t think so, right? Giving in to changing times, fashion institutes have mushroomed across the country and fashion designing courses are much sought after. Young boys and girls with a penchant for style and dressing up make a beeline for a fashion degree from a reputable fashion design institute after their 12th in a bid to make it big in the fashion world.

Getting started in the fashion industry, however, is a rather daunting task. Being a part of it means entering an extremely competitive world where you have to be in the know of rapidly changing trends to woo a demanding clientele who are spoilt for choice.

Irrespective of all the hard work associated with it, a career in fashion attracts creative, bold and experimental youngsters whose love for the fashion industry is complemented by their determination to not just foray into the scene but also leave their distinct mark on it.

One of the best ways to get started is by going in for a fashion internship. Doesn’t matter if you already have a fashion degree, having pursued a fashion designing course – nothing beats real-world experience. An internship will add on to your textbook knowledge and help you hone your skills like nothing else. Besides, you never know something as temporary as an internship could well serve as an extended job interview and land you a permanent position in your dream firm.

Feedback of WLCI on fallen Gold Price

28 May

WLCI Feedback

The “Gold” metal which is very much dear to the Indians, has fallen in terms of price sharply in the market in the recent days. Recently it ranges between Rs 28,000 to 29,000. In the recent times gold as a metal has lost its “safe-heaven-appeal”. In India, some time ago the prospect of increase in prices was due to a hike in duty, which came into force in January 2013, that might have encouraged people to buy. After the duty hike, India imported around 200 tonnes of gold in January-March 2013. Right now compared to its last years market value-Gold prices have dropped and experts indicate a further drop in prices in the future.

WLCI Advertising and Design School Visits ‘Archies’ Workshop

17 May

It was just another sunny day, when the students of WLCI Advertising and Design School assembled near the grounds of Archies Workshop to take a tour of the Archies printing and packaging factory. All the students were extremely excited to visit one of the leading ‘Card and Gift’ item manufacturing giants. Umpteen times the students had bought cards and gifts from their favourite ‘Archies Gallery’, this was the first time they had the opportunity to visit the ‘Archies’ workshop and experience what went on behind the scene. This outdoor learning session was organized by the faculties of WLCI Advertising and Design School and along with the students their mentor Deepti Baveja was accompanying them.

The workshop venue was impressive and vast. There were several divisions in the workshop/factory, where the cards, posters, diaries, notebook and many other paper related items were printed. They got to view the black and white printing, offset printing machines and colour printing machines. All the students were in awe of the entire process and paid full attention as to how the printing of various materials took place.

The day started with meeting some of the employees of the printing division who were extremely warm and patient with the student’s queries. Unwearied they took each of the questions asked by the budding designers and answered them meticulously and at times demonstrated the process- how and why things were done in a certain way. The students were also explained the entire progression step by step-starting right from designing the card/poster etc layout in the computer to deciding the colour for printing to finally printing the materials.

After printing how the paper was cut and stored in various slots were also shown to the students. The printed material went through several quality control measures and checked for any discrepancies before finally being ‘Okayed’ as the final product. Finally the items were packed and kept for distribution to thousands of ‘Archies’ stores in and around Delhi and the country.

Field-visit ‘learning’ sessions like this is not uncommon in WLCI, where the students are exposed to real world experiences which enrich their theoretical learning and enhance their knowledge as well and encourage their interest in the subject that is being taught in the classrooms.
Archies factory visit was one such field visits taken by the WLCI Advertising and Design School. This is what the WLCI’ians callFun Learning!
